Biografía

Born in 1975 in Lot-et-Garonne (France), Nicolas Monjo is a talented self-taught painter currently working in Angoulême. After a long search for his artistic path, he discovered painting at the age of 20 and has since devoted himself to developing a unique and poetic technique that is distinctly his own. This technique allows him to manipulate the medium, creating a highly personal style.

The artist masterfully plays with the laws of chemistry by blending acrylic and oil on the same canvas, creating pronounced relief effects that draw the viewer into his world. He favors shades of gray and dark blue, making his works immediately recognizable through a unique, fantastical atmosphere that borders on surrealism.

The human figure is at the heart of his work, often set in fantastical worlds. His subjects are frequently confined, crushed by the frame of the painting, symbolizing the difficulty of transcending our condition in a violent and anxiety-inducing society. The dominant/dominated relationship is frequently explored, with the recurring figure of the fish as its ultimate expression.

Monjo reveals himself in each of his paintings, subtly unveiling his own experiences in a harsh and cold world where the law of the strongest often prevails. He brilliantly captures the fragility of the human condition that seems to oppress all his characters. Both figuratively and literally, men and women are enclosed within the canvas frames—a stark reminder of their inability to break free from the mundane chains of existence and daily life.

Monjo’s characters, sometimes reminiscent of Fernand Léger’s rounded figures, are accompanied by animals such as dogs, cats, and fish. They are often depicted in contorted poses, defying physical limits, as seen in his works where ten characters are crammed into a tiny car.

His art also explores everyday themes with a personal and clear-sighted vision, revealing the fragility of the human condition. Hearts, guitars, and objects from daily life—bottles, plates, forks, and abandoned glasses—populate his canvases, adding a touch of whimsy and sincerity.

Nicolas Monjo, a composer of canvases, leaves it to others to interpret his work. His artistic journey is a poetic and profound exploration of the poetry of the mundane, highlighting the beauty and universal struggle to transcend the ordinary.
