Biography

Thierry Guetta, known as Mr Brainwash (or MBW), is a French graffiti artist born in 1966 near Paris. This renowned artist has managed to stand out with his unique style, merging the worlds of pop art and street art.

As a provocative figure in street art, Mr Brainwash recontextualizes images from popular culture and art history in his screen prints and sculptures, full of irony. His colorful texts and iconography reflect his sensitivity inspired by graffiti, thus diverting their original sources.

At the age of 15, he moved to Los Angeles with his family after the death of his mother.

In 1999, during a trip to France, he discovered street art with his cousin, the artist Invader. Passionate about video, he began filming all the graffiti escapades alongside other street artists, such as Shepard Fairey or Wevs.

Inspired, he himself delved into graffiti, adopting the pseudonym Mr Brainwash. He then mixed Banksy’s stencil techniques with Andy Warhol’s imagery.

In 2009, he met Banksy and helped organize the Barely Legal exhibition in Los Angeles. Their collaboration led to the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, presented at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar. This film traces the evolution of the street art movement with Mr Brainwash, who, alongside Banksy, made art accessible to the masses. Navigating between the worlds of cinema, celebrity culture, music, and sports, Mr. Brainwash has cemented his legacy in the art world.

Over the years, Mr Brainwash has designed album covers for Madonna and Rick Ross. His works have also appeared in films and series. Committed to philanthropic causes, he supports several organizations and has met influential figures such as Michelle Obama and Pope Francis.

In December 2022, he inaugurated the Mr Brainwash Art Museum in Beverly Hills, the first contemporary art museum created and managed by a living artist. As a tireless creator and catalyst-analyst of pop culture, Mr Brainwash continues to inspire with his art, viewing the museum as an artistic playground for all ages, a new platform to express uplifting messages bringing hope, positivity, and beauty to visitors from around the world.

Since his beginnings, Mr Brainwash has disrupted the art world with his innovative and bold style, combining elements of pop art and street art to create spectacular exhibitions and collaborations.

Mr Brainwash continues his journey, and “Time Will Tell.”
