Michel Bassompierre was one of the most significant artists in the field of contemporary animal sculpture. He brought to this discipline a singular and innovative style, instantly recognizable at first glance. Seductive, delicate, and deeply endearing, his work travels the world, releasing his marble and bronze menagerie to all corners of the globe. Throughout his career, he was also honored with the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, recognizing the importance of his contribution to artistic creation.

Trained in René Leleu’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, Michel Bassompierre learned how to truly see and observe. The many sketches he produced enabled him to build a profound understanding of the animal body — this intricately articulated mechanism whose line and movement he mastered. It is precisely this sense of life that he succeeded in conveying, making his work deeply sensitive. Favoring animals with rounded forms — bears, gorillas, Asian elephants, and horses — he created sculptures that are both soft and precise, where light never harshly collides with shadow. This sculptural relationship also reflects his connection to the wild world, for which he held great fascination, far removed from any anthropomorphism.

These peaceful animals, which seem to be captured in the intimacy of their lives, are embodied in bronze or Carrara marble according to the traditional codes of sculpture. Michel Bassompierre notably employed the lost-wax casting technique for all of his patinated bronzes.
